Papers of the Gaines family, 1841-1899.

The Gaines family papers consist chiefly of the correspondence of Marcus Junius Gaines, U.S. consul to Tripoli, 1849-1861, and his English wife, Maggie Dickson Gaines. Topics include a visit to a Genoan palace and an attempted revolution there in 1849, their social life in Tripoli, the hospitality of the Arabs, and their temperance, Arab shops, Ramadan, the arrival of Othman Pasha, antelope hunting in the desert, a visit to the apartments of the Pasha's wife and a possible series of articles for the "Southern literary messenger." Other family letters discuss religious conversion, Baptismal rite of sprinkling vs. immersion, deaths in the family, including a brother killed in the Civil War, and the laying of the Transatlantic Cable. The collection also contains copies of letters and other documents re: a proposed recall of Gaines from his consulship. In addition there are photographs and an ambrotype of Gaines family members, genealogy materials and newsclippings.
